Once upon a time, in the north-eastern reaches of Brazil, amidst the fertile lands and tropical climates, a remarkable tree named Cajueiro, also known as the Cashew tree, came into being. Born from a humble seed, I, Caju, as they call me in Portuguese, belong to the botanical family Anacardiaceae. Standing proudly as an evergreen, I reach heights of 10-12 meters with a unique, irregular trunk. My leaves, arranged in a spiral pattern, are leathery and come in various shapes, from elliptic to ovate, providing shelter under the tropical sun.

In the bloom of the season, my tree adorns itself with delicate, pale green flowers that later blush with a reddish hue. These blossoms, clustered in panicles, herald the arrival of my fruits—the cashew apples and the enigmatic cashew nuts. The cashew apple, fondly called "marañón" in Central America, ripens into a vibrant yellow or red structure, offering a juicy and sweet treat. Yet, hidden within this fleshy pseudofruit lies my true treasure—a kidney-shaped drupe that bears the cashew nut.

As a nut, both in culinary and botanical terms, I am unique. Encased within a double shell that protects me with a caustic resin, urushiol, I am prized for my rich flavour and nutritional value. While some may be allergic to me due to this resin, I am known to cause fewer allergic reactions compared to other nuts. My journey from blossom to fruit is a tale of resilience and bounty, symbolizing the harmony between nature's beauty and the sustenance it provides.
